Uptown Tent City is Gone

Yet Uptown Tent City lives in new forms

Good job, heartless and corrupt City of Chicago government, the physical encampments of Uptown Tent City ceased to exist on September 20, 2017.

The worst part of this and the most important part, the community of viaduct residents have been split into a hundred pieces, scattered to the winds of Uptown and beyond. These people still exist, their problems multiplied.

The Uptown Tent City Organizers, the movement, has always been a coalition of individuals and conglomeration of individual acts, not a corporate organization. This diverse coalition has always had 3 major components, each supportive of the others. Protest, Legal and Compassion.

None of that has changed though the landscape of homelessness in Uptown Chicago is new and changed. Quick to adapt to these changes, there have been some changes in the grassroots movements.

Out of equal respect to all, this website will be archived in its live state to document and make available the important history of Uptown Tent City 1-4.

The compassion portion, the people every day in the viaducts with tents, tarps, food etc., the ones that show up with trucks and crew for moves, have gone onto new pursuits reflecting the new landscape. Predominantly these are Uptown Outside and Chicago Tiny House.

The legal portion remains intact. The Uptown Tent City encampments may be physically gone for now, but very important law suits to protect homeless rights remain very much alive. The UTCO Facebook page as well as Uptown People’s Law Center remain good contact points.

The majority of the protest portion and post-eviction membership are still at the UTCO Facebook page.

Thank you for you generous support and caring for the 2.5 years the Uptown Tent City movement was organized. Please support all our new directions.

Chicago Police Dept Notifies Uptown Tent City People Have No Right to Exist Somewhere

Police Evict Tent City 3 to Other Side of Sidewalk

The morning of September 19, 2017, the Chicago Police Department began the process of brutally evicting Uptown Tent City 3 for the 3rd time. Trucks lined up to receive their homes and every possession they had, as armed and bullet-proof vested police notified every tent inhabitant they had to go immediately.

After the police finished bullying and scaring everyone, tearing Uptown Tent City to pieces in the process, residents and activists were able to move some tents and possessions to the other side of the sidewalk. Other tents and possessions were thrown into the waiting trucks and hauled off.

How sick and abusive the City of Chicago is

Alderman James Cappleman and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, you own this militaristic attack on citizens. Your lies are broken and so is the public’s faith in you.
